News just in - Bob's work and family commitments have delayed his departure, but he is now planning to compete in the Single-Handed Transatlantic Race next June (2009) and make Rhode Island his departure point for the North West Passage challenge. Watch
this space ...

Daz's skipper in the Two-Handed Transat, Bob Beggs, is embarking on the testing adventure of an anticlockwise circumnavigation of the North American continent via the infamious North West Passage. Under sail. From Plymouth, UK. Against the current. In a Dazcat.

This has never been achieved to date (though a west to east navigation of the Passage was made under sail in 2007, by Sebastien Roubinet and his boat Babouche, and much heavier sail boats have managed it with assistance from engines). We are very proud that Bob has chosen a Dazcat to do it in. We have loaned him our 8m moulds, which he is modifying to make 10m hulls, and the build is now well underway and on course for the start of the adventure in June 2008.

Bob hopes to raise awareness of climate change in polar regions and will be in communication with schools and colleges; students will be participating in curriculum related studies as they follow his progress. The crew's energy needs will be met through renewable solar and wind power.

For nostalgia's sake, and because we haven't seen these before, here are some pictures from the Two-Handed Transatlantic Race Bob did with Daz in the prototype 8m.

We'll keep you in touch with progress as and when we can; until we have actual photographs, below is an artist's impression of Bob's adventure. Boat image courtesy of Chris French, ice floe of Waterlines.
